History of Uncle Calvin's
Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse was started in 1982 by Rev. Trey Hammond, an
Associate Pastor of Northpark Presbyterian Church at the time. His original
vision was to provide a place where original music could be heard in a relaxed
listening room, free of smoke and alcohol where people could enjoy fellowship
and have fun.
Starting with a borrowed sound system, some candles, homemade tablecloths, and
Perrier bottles filled with flowers, UC opened in the old location of Northpark
Church at Park Lane and Central (that location has since been redeveloped). The
church moved to its current location near Walnut Hill and Central in the early
90s. Many well known musicians have played and entertained here over the years.
The "Uncle" in the name is Protestant reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) a pastor,
teacher, scholar and humanist. As our founder Rev. Trey wrote, "we try to
celebrate his lighter side."
Northpark Church has continued to sponsor the coffeehouse since its inception in
1982 and we are truly grateful for their support.
